Audiences love watching the “Ted 2” trailer on YouTube. The trailer has received 23 million hits since January.
Logline: Newlywed couple Ted and Tami-Lynn want to have a baby, but in order to qualify to be a parent, Ted will have to prove he’s a person in a court of law.
But now that the film is in the theatre, it’s not doing so well on opening weekend.
The budget on “Ted 2” was reportedly $68 million.
The original film, “Ted,” had a budget of $50 million and grossed $549 million worldwide.
So, why is it off track?
I loved “Ted.” I loved the innovative nature of Ted. He’s a talking teddy bear. The first film was edited so well and it was tight. It was edited by the same person. So, it’s not that.
What went wrong? Was it marketing? Was it story? Was it because it was a sequel?
In my opinion, there are a few problems that don’t have me racing to the movie theatre for “Ted 2.”
First, I don’t see actress Mila Kunis in “Ted 2.” This was an awful decision to exclude her from the plot. Sure enough, she’s not credited in the sequel so she doesn’t even have a small role? Why not? Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis had chemistry in the first film. And she balanced out the little boy’s bad behavior with his teddy bear as though she was a mother figure. It was fun and real. Without her, the plot has to go… to court to introduce a new woman? WHY?
Secondly, the plot of the sequel seems to focus on the character of Tami-Lynn too much. She was nice as a drop-in character in the first film, but to feature her story with Ted is an uninviting turn of plot.
Thirdly, the trailer looks boring for a comedic film that paid off repeatedly in the original “Ted.” Let’s look back at the original trailer with nearly 20 million views. It’s fun.
Fourth, it’s a sequel. There has to be a huge effort to continue the story and take it to the next level. Ted is grown up and wants children in the sequel? Where is his naughty little boy behavior?
Fifth, if they had a great actor such as Morgan Freeman in the film, they should have made him the third character to finish the triangular relationship. That would have elevated the material, especially after removing Mila Kunis from the mix. In the trailer, it looks as though Freeman only has a bit role and that’s a pity. He’s one of the greatest actors of our generation.
Taking all of those issues into account, I can wait on this one.
I will wait to watch “Ted 2” when it comes to Netflix… while keeping an eye on the box office to see how word-of-mouth affects the numbers. If it doesn’t improve dramatically soon, Ted’s days are numbered to appear in “Ted 3.”
Am I worried about Ted creator Seth MacFarlane? He gave a great interview on Howard Stern and talked about his income. And according to reports, he is worth $200 million. Yep. He’ll be just fine.
